FAW Premier Cup to continue

The FAW Premier Cup is to continue next season after clubs at a special meeting this afternoon voted to accept an offer from BBC Wales.

There are a number of changes to the format of the competition, which will be entering its fifth season:

The three Nationwide League clubs plus League of Wales champions Barry Town will all receive byes to the quarter finals, where they will then play away to the winners and runners up from the two groups of four.

Group matches will continue to be played on a home and away basis, and the semi-finals, like the quarter-finals and the Final itself will be played over one leg.--

SEASONED PLAYER SET TO SIGN

SEASONED campaigner John Durnin is expected to sign for the Lilywhites this week. Durnin, played for Kidderminster Harriers last season after joining them from Portsmouth and manager Lee Williams sees him as an ideal front runner for the
coming season.
"John is vastly experienced and although he is 35 he is very fit and could score a lot of goals in the League of Wales," he said. "His home is in Warrington and he is keen to move back to the north west."

Three players who have put pen to paper already are Matthew Cross, Michael Jackson and Martin Filson. Cross is a midfielder who has played for Bangor City
and Rhayader. Jackson is an exciting prospect who has signed from Southport and is equally at home in the centre of defence or in midfield while Filson is a commanding centre back who helped Stalybridge Celtic to the Unibond League title last season and will be in his second spell at Belle Vue.

One shock at Belle Vue this week is the departure of newly appointed reserve team manager Steve Jones who has signed for Colwyn Bay. Director of Football Development Jim Smith has other irons in the fire however and is confident of filliong the gap quickly.

Tranmere Rovers are the first pre-season visitors to Belle Vue on Monday July 23 (kick off 7.30pm). New boss Dave Watson has promised to send a strong squad for the first run out for the Lilywhites.

Club Round-Up

Monday 23/7: RHYL 1 Tranmere Rovers XI 4

A useful work-out for Lee Williams' side as visitors Tranmere turned on the style in a comprehensive victory. With the visitors looking dangerous on every break, it was only a matter of time before Sean Thornton opened the account with a clinical finish after 19 minutes. Paul Robinson and Alex Hay added two more before half-time.

Rhyl put up more of fight after the break, and pulled one back on 81 mins when Danny Barton rose to head home from a right-wing cross. Tranmere regained their three goal advantage almost immediately when Ryan Taylor knocked home a fine shot from the restart.

Rhyl: Ged McGuigan, D Parry (A Sheen), Gary Curtis (C Sharratt), M Jackson, Martin Filson, G Wilson (Andy Jones), J Stannard, R Williams (Mike Jones), Dave O'Gorman (Mo Bukatoo), John Durnin (Danny Barton), Matthew Cross.

Tuesday 24/7: Llandudno 2 RHYL RESERVES 1

A superb performance from Rhyl's second string saw them take the lead through a Dean Jones goal after 22 minutes. Llandudno clawed themselves back into the game after the break, equalising through Ben Hughes and winning through a James Kincade "wonder goal" on 76 mins.

Rhyl Reserves: J Jones, A Davies, S Morgan, S Bowen (C Marchbank), D Fuller, P Evans (P Goodwin), Dean Jones (D Billingsley), R Jones, S Wallis, G Davies, L Murray (Alan Evans)

Saturday 28/7/2001

Rhyl 4 Prescot Cables 2

Rhyl ran out convincing winners in the end thanks to a hat-trick from Dave O'Gorman and another from Andy Jones. Prescot pulled themselves back from a two-goal deficit to go into the interval level, but they had no answer to Rhyl's second half showing.

Rhyl: J Jones, A Sheen (McMahon), D Parry, M Jackson, M Filson, M Jones (Wilson), Allan Jones, Andy Jones, D O'Gorman, D Barton, M Cross.

Friendly Round-Up

Tue Aug 7th: Marine 1 Rhyl 2
- details to follow

Sat Aug 4th: Rhyl 1 Blackpool 1

This unofficial battle of the seaside resorts ended in a stalemate with Rhyl putting on their best show of the pre-season yet. With Blackpool fielding a very strong side, they took the lead on 18 mins when Clarkson robbed Steve Evans and side-stepped Lee Williams. O'Gorman squandered several chances to equalise before Matthew Cross fired wide on the stroke of half-time.   Rhyl pressed hard after the break, and when Wes Kinney fed Barton from a stray pass, Barton fired home from fully 25-yards. Blackpool tried to recover the situation but when Collins seemed to have done so, Lee Williams pulled off a superb diving save to deny him.

Rhyl: L Williams, Mike Jones, M Cross, M Jackson, M Simpson (D Parry), Steve Evans), John Stannard (Sheen), G Wilson, Allan Jones (Andy Jones), D O'Gorman (Kinney), Barton.

Fri Aug 3rd: Rhyl 1 Preston North End 4
Rhyl were no match for impressive Preston,  falling behind to an early goal after four minutes and never really troubling their opponents until Danny Barton notched a late consolation after 83 minutes. Preston took a 4-0 half-time lead thanks to efforts from Mark Wright , Brian Murphy (2) and an own goal after some further good work by Murphy. Preston eased off after the break but it was still a useful workout for Rhyl.

Rhyl: L Williams, Mike Jones (Sharratt), M Cross, M Jackson, M Simpson (A Sheen), Steve Evans (D Parry), Andy Jones (John Stannard), G Wilson, D O'Gorman (W Kinney), John Durnin (D Barton), R Williams (Allan Jones).

Wed Aug 1st: Rhyl 3 Stockport County 5
A brilliant first half performance saw Rhyl 3-1 up at the interval, but a collapse in the second half saw the Nationwide League visitors gain victory. Gareth Wilson put Rhyl ahead on 25 mins, only for Neil Ross to equalise somewhat against the run of play four minutes later. Mattew Cross then scored a quick brace on 40 and 43 mins. The first came from a sweeping three-man move and a second from some persistance after an initial shot had struck  the bar.

Stockport took control after the break, pulling a goal back after only 49 mins through Ian Lawson, then equalising through Ross and gaining a two goal final advantage thanks to efforts from Neil Hardy and John Daley.

Rhyl: Lee Williams, D Parry (McMahon), M Cross (Sharratt), M Jackson, R Williams, G Wilson, Andy Jones (A Sheen), Paul Simpson, Allan Jones, John Durnin, Dave O'Gorman (Mike Jones).
